Graduation Requirements

Beginning with the Graduating Class of 2016

High School Graduation Requirements

Beginning with the graduating class of 2016, students must complete 220 units of credit and complete units in the following specific content areas and minimum amounts in order to receive a high school diploma.  Five credits are the equivalent of one semester. 
 
STUDENTS MUST PASS THE MATH AND ENGLISH CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAMS (CAHSEE) IN ORDER TO GRADUATE

A - Social Science

30 credits

  • World History
  • US History or AP US History
  • Government &  Economics or AP Government

B - English

40 credits

  • English 9
  • English 10
  • American Literature or AP English Language
  • Expository Reading and Writing or AP English Literature

C - Math

30 credits

  • Including HS Math 2
  • 30 credits must becompleted during grades 9-12

D - Science

20 credits 

  • 1 year of Life Science
  • 1 year of Physical Science
    • (one year must include a lab)

E - World Language

20 credits

  • Must be same language w/ completion of year 2 of the language during grades 9-12

F - Arts

10 credits

  • Visual, Performing or Practical Arts

G - Electives

50 credits

  • Must include one year-long college prep. elective

 Physical Education

20 credits

  • Including PE 9A

 

Health

                                          

OUSD HIV/AIDS Requirement Online  (no credit)

Students may fulfill state health requirement by exam or coursework

The Health Competency and HIV/AIDS Requirement Online instructional materials are available for parents who want to preview the lessons.  Just stop by your child's high school office and request to preview the book HIV/AIDS Requirement Online - Instructional Materials for Parent Preview.

Students who have already taken and passed Contemporary Living do not have to complete this requirement online.

The OUSD The Health Competency and HIV/AIDS Requirement Online aligns with the HIV/AIDS unit taught through Contemporary Living.  The lessons cover:

  • HIV/AIDS and its effects on the body
  • Ways HIV is transmitted
  • Reducing the risk of contracting HIV
  • Public health issues associated with HIV/AIDS
  • Refusal and decision-making skills to avoid high-risk activities
  • Societal views on HIV/AIDS and compassion for persons with HIV/AIDS
  • Local resources for HIV testing and medical care
