Mr. Omar's Bio

I was born in the State of Oaxaca, Mexico. In 1989, my family moved to Encinitas, where I grew up and attended school. During the first two years of high school I did not imagine myself attending college; however, a few of my teachers nurtured a culture of education. I became motivated and dedicated my last two years to staying on track with my studies. I also became involved in sports and campus clubs. Both the support and campus involvement played a key role to my successful completion of high school.

After graduating from San Dieguito Academy, I attended MiraCosta College for three years. I completed my A.A. degree in Administration of Justice and transferred to California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). My majors were Criminology & Justice Studies and Sociology, with a concentration in Critical Race Studies. I received my B.A. with a double major in 2009.

During my studies at CSUSM, I was involved in student organizations such as Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A), Teatro Molcajete (Spanish theater club), Espiritu de Nuestro Futuro now called Standing Together As oNe Dream (S.T.A.N.D.), and Oaxaca Student Organization (O.S.O.). These student organizations promoted equity, diversity and cultural appreciation.

I completed my Master of Arts in Sociological Practice at CSUSM in May 2017. My research focused on Undocumented Migrants deportation experiences. Through my educational journey, I have received support from staff, administrators and my professors, which has motivated me to continue on my educational path. I look forward to supporting our ECHS students on their paths towards successfully completing high school and moving forward to Postsecondary education and career options.

I am currently a senior at CSUSM pursuing a bachelor’s Degree on Liberal Studies with a depth of study in Sociology. I am very passionate about working with and teaching students of all ages.

My name is Miguel Buclon, I graduated from El Camino High School in 2011. I am a proud wildcat and it is an honor to be working back on this campus as part of the GEAR UP team. I am currently a student at MiraCosta College pursuing a degree in Kinesiology. I plan to transfer to Cal State San Marcos to pursue my bachelors. My hobbies are mixed martial arts, listening to music and helping others in my community. I enjoy working with high school students because I see a lot of potential in each and every one of them, seeing their success first hand is self-rewarding. I hope to inspire and motivate as many students as possible during my time here.

Alicia Tovar

Hi, my name is Alicia Tovar. In 2013, I received my high school diploma from Oceanside High School (Go Pirates!). I went on to attend John Muir College at the University of California, San Diego and chose to major in ecology, behavior and evolution. The highlight of my academic career was having the opportunity to work for a year on independent undergraduate research in the Meyer lab on experimentally evolving viruses to study the gain of function in infecting novel hosts. This past June, I was able to successfully complete my undergraduate studies and earned a Bachelors in Science. Throughout my schooling journey, I was lucky enough to have a sturdy support net from staff and administrators that I could turn to along the way, which helped make my education up until this point into a reality. I have just recently started my first year with GEAR UP as a tutor, and I am excited to help be a part of this supportive team.
