Information

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal partnership grant. This program was enacted as part of the 1998 Higher Education Act to give more low-income students the skills, encouragement, and preparation to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

MiraCosta College was awarded a GEAR UP grant in 2011, and partnered with Oceanside Unified School District to serve the students of the 2017 and 2018 graduating classes from Oceanside and El Camino High Schools.

The cohorts were initially the 6th and 7th grade students from Jefferson and Chavez Middle Schools. Beginning in the fall of 2013, GEAR UP included Oceanside and El Camino High Schools, as the cohorts from Jefferson and Chavez moved into high school.

The primary goal is to prepare all students with the skills and aspirations needed to graduate from high school and succeed in a productive post-secondary educational option of their choice. To reach this goal, three performance objectives were identified, with programs and services designed to meet each one:

  1. To increase students’ academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education.

  2. To increase graduation rates and entry into post-secondary education.

  3. To increase students’ and their families’ knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation and financing.
