Ron Gladnick posed the question.

“Who you picking to win the Avocado League?” the Torrey Pines High coach asked.  The response was “Who do I pick to finish last? That’s the stumper.” Of all the leagues in the San Diego Section that produce football powers — Avocado, Western, Grossmont Hills, Eastern, Palomar and Metro Mesa — the numbers clearly say the Avocado League is the cream of the crop.

The seven-team Avocado — Torrey Pines, La Costa Canyon, Mission Hills, San Marcos, Carlsbad, Oceanside and El Camino — has five teams ranked in this week’s section Top 10. There’s No. 1 Torrey Pines, No. 2 La Costa Canyon, No. 5 Mission Hills, No. 6 San Marcos and No. 9 Carlsbad. And all seven teams got votes in the preseason poll.

“I’ve had some good teams over the years, and on any given Friday I think we can compete with just about anyone in the county,” said Valley Center coach Rob Gilster, whose team is in the Valley League. “But we don’t have the size or depth to play in the Avocado League.

“Those guys are playing a heater every week.”

CalPreps awards every team in the state a rating.  Only two leagues in San Diego — the Avocado and Western — had every team with a positive preseason rating with Mission Hills (45.6) at the top and Carlsbad (10.2) at the bottom of the Avo. The league’s average rating was 26.3.  “Hey, there are some good leagues in this county,” said La Costa Canyon coach Sean Sovacool. “But I don’t think anyone plays the type of league schedule we do in the Avo.  “You need to be ready to play every week.

“Every game can come down to a blown assignment, a missed call by the officials, an injury. “It’s that darn competitive.”

The Western League — composed of Cathedral Catholic, Madison, St. Augustine, Point Loma and Lincoln — had Madison (31.8) at the top with Lincoln (2.0) at the bottom. The league average rating was 17.4. Three teams — No. 3 Madison, No. 8 Cathedral Catholic and No. 10 Lincoln — are ranked in the Top 10.

The Grossmont Hills League — made up of Helix, Grossmont, Steele Canyon, Granite Hills, El Capitan and Valhalla — had Helix (43.8) at the top with Valhalla (-10.5) at the bottom. The league average was 20.0.  Only No. 4 Helix is ranked in the Top 10. Games, however, are played on the field and not on computers.  Mission Hills lost to Helix in last year’s section Open Division championship game. El Camino, which, was 2-4 in league play, won the section Division I title and let the Southern California title game — a 13-10 loss to Los Angeles Crenshaw — slip through its fingers.

Teams in the Avocado League were a combined 55-32 — a winning percentage of 63.2 in 2017.  Helix added to its Open crown by winning a SoCal Regional crown before losing a 49-42 decision to Folsom for the state title.  Steele Canyon surprised everyone, winning its last eight games and capturing the state 3A crown.  Grossmont Hills League teams — with Granite Hills replacing West Hills this season — went 47-29 last season, a 61.8 winning percentage.  No team from the Western League made it to a San Diego Section final in ’17. With Mira Mesa moving to the Eastern League and Lincoln coming from the Eastern, teams were 40-28, a 58.8 winning percentage.

“It’s hard to say who has the best league. It changes year to year, maybe even week to week,” said Helix coach Robbie Owens. “I don’t think you can argue the Avocado League is tough. And those teams are certainly playoff ready.  “But our league is pretty darn competitive. And the Western League with all those good schools, well, they have a big game every week, too.”  The Avocado League is the only league in the section where every team is in Division I.

The Open Division takes its teams from Division I, so the Open Division will be a monster, and Division I could be its strongest in years.  “Some really good teams won’t make it to the Open Division,” Owens said. “And we all think we’re Open Division teams.

“So there are going to be some very interesting games when league play gets here.”
